With this DVD on the Russian
Defence (Petroff Defence) Alexei Shirov continues the successful and
highly praised series of his best games. Shirov sets off from the outset to show that the Russian Defence is not a dry, boring or drawish opening. Thus he begins the DVD with a game featuring the Cochrane Gambit. Moving to the more solid lines Shirov manages to penetrate their deep content. The viewer will draw benefit from Shirov's brilliant explanation of the middle and endgames arising from the Russian as well as learning its lines. Video running time: over 5 hours.
Alexei Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion
Mikhail Tal and, perhaps not so coincidentally, his playing style reminds many chess fans of the
young Tal. In the early 90ies, a comet-like rise brought the
young Latvian to the top of the world rankings. At just 22 years old Shirov already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and
belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the
best players in the world, continually delighting chess fans with original and
amazing ideas.
