In fact the Ruy Lopez was featured in Shirov's games at the high-class tournaments of 2006-7 and during his candidate matches versus GM Michael Adams and GM Lev Aronian. As Black, he successfully returned to the Archangel system 5...b5 6.Bb3 Bc5 (5 games). As White, he had to face the difficult question how to deal with the popular Marshall Attack (8...d5) (3 games). Alexei Shirov was born in Riga just like world champion Mihail Tal, and his playing style reminds many chess fans of the young Tal. In the early 90's, a comet-like rise brought the young Latvian to the top of the world rankings. Being no older than 22 years, he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting all chess fans with original and amazing ideas on the board.
