Before the Staunton chessmen arrived on the scene in October of 1849, tournament and café chess play was dominated by what are now known as English Pattern chessmen. Variations of that design were legion. Out of that group came the beautiful Lund chessmen, produced by Thomas Lund and William Lund in the early 1800s. One of the more elegant designs which were popular from 1835 until the end of the Victorian period was the Northern Upright or Edinburgh Chessmen. The set is alleged by Howard Staunton to have been designed by Lord John Hay and marketed mainly in Scotland by Jaques of London. In its continuing effort to resurrect a lost art, The House of Staunton®, Inc. has produced an accurate recreation of the original Northern Upright Chessmen produced by the firm of John Jaques of London.
