Nalimov Tablebases provide high-powered instruction for analyzing endgames with a small number of pieces. Total Nalimov Tablebases cover exhaustively all endgames with 5 pieces (the Kings count as two of the pieces) or less - PLUS nearly all 6 piece or less endgames.

More specifically, the 6 piece endgames include (as well as the two Kings): Rook and pawn vs Rook and pawn, three pawns vs pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook or Queen, two Rooks vs Rook and Knight, two Rooks, or Bishop and Knight, Queen and Knight vs Queen and Knight, Bishop and two Knights vs Rook, Knight and pawn vs Bishop and pawn, Knight and pawn, or pawn and pawn, two Bishops vs Bishop and Knight, two Bishops, or two Knights, Bishop and Knight vs Bishop and Knight or Knight and Knight, Bishop and two pawns vs Rook, Knight or Bishop, Knight and two pawns vs Rook, Knight or Bishop, two pawns vs two pawns, Bishop and pawn vs Bishop and pawn or two pawns, two Knights and pawn vs Rook, Queen and two pawns vs Queen, Queen and pawn vs Queen and pawn, and two Queens vs two Queens. Simply an amazing amount of material!

Just hook the Nalimov Tablebases up to your chess playing software (such as Fritz, Shredder, Junior, ChessBase, Chess Assistant, Rybka, Hiarcs, Chess Tiger, etc.) and they will work seemlessly to tell you whether a position is won, lost, or drawn and how many moves it will take to reach that result assuming optimum play by both sides.  Supplied with Nalimov Tablebases, the playing programs become monsters in the late endgame because they instantly utilize the tablebases evaluations as soon as a qualifying position (6 pieces or less) arises in the playing programs thinking! 

One word of caution. To optimize the benefits of the Nalimov Tablebases you will need to install them on your hard drive. The problem with this is that they take up an enormous amount of disk space - 100 GB is recommended for full utilization of these two disks.

A special bonus database of 376,000 correspondence games in .pgn format accompanies these disks.
