This Elite board is made from Walnut, which has a generally straight grain with a medium coarse, uniform texture. Black Walnut is a rich very dark brown to almost black heartwood that is moderately heavy, hard, strong, and stiff. Walnut is prized in North America for high-end cabinetry and furniture, and has long been a premier choice for high end furniture and millwork. This dark wood makes for an extremely attractive chess board at a terrific price.

The light squares are fabricated from Bird’s-eye Maple (BEM), while the dark squares are set in beautiful selected Walnut. These veneered chess boards are 0.5" thick with a satin-like finish, giving a smooth touch to the boards and protecting chess players from light reflection.

Our Elite wooden chess boards in Walnut are available with squares of  2.375", perfect for any quality chess set with a King's base of 1.75 inches. The overall size is 23.5 x 23.5 inches. Walnut is an excellent choice of wood for contrasting with Ebony or ebonized chess sets. Rosewood chess sets also work wonderfully with mahogany as the rich and warm colors of the Walnut and Rosewood compliment each other nicely.
