ChessMaster

Q. Are there features in Chessmaster® 10th Edition that can be enjoyed by players who are new to the game of chess?

A. Chessmaster is designed to improve your game at every level of play. If you are new to the game, you may attend the new Chessmaster Academy and learn the basics from International Master Josh Waitzkin. Grandmaster Larry Christiansen provides additional instructions for more intermediate players on the fine points of attacking your opponent. The additional Training mode lets you use specific Mentor features like Quick Hints, Advice, Chess Coach (a collection of easy-to-use visual hints), and Game Analysis for quick improvements to your game.

Q. When will Chessmaster 10th Edition be available at retail?

A. It's due to ship from our warehouses on August 10 2004, and should be at your local retailer by August 14. Or you can shop online at www.ubi.com.

Q. Is there content in Chessmaster specifically designed with younger players in mind?

A. An entire section of Chessmaster is designed to appeal to younger players or people who just want to have fun with the game. It features a streamlined interface, simplified coaching, whimsical 3D sets and backgrounds, and tutorials aimed at a younger audience.

Q. What's new in this edition?

A. People familiar with Chessmaster will instantly notice the completely revised and streamlined interface. The new interface is easy to navigate, and the pull-down menus make it simple to access features and preferences. Perhaps the biggest addition to Chessmaster is the new online chess module, which allows players to communicate (via chat windows, messages, and even voice chat), to compete (in rated and unrated games, tournaments, ladders, and simultaneous exhibitions), and to learn from each other (using the integrated teaching tools). Also, Chessmaster's renowned ability to improve your game has been greatly enhanced. An all-new Academy section has been added, where you will be offered personal instruction on everything from the basic moves to strategies for attacking your opponent. Other new features are:
  • 40 new computer opponents
  • 35 chess sets, including three animated chess sets (some of the sets must be unlocked by winning rated games)
  • Four different interface skins
  • A large selection of game modes including Tournaments (with over 50 predefined tournaments) and Puzzles (with 8 different puzzle types)
  • A detailed player statistics section
  • A new Openings section including a new visual learning tool
  • More than 50,000 new games added to the database, containing the most important tournament games of 2002-2004

Q. Is there a multiplayer option?

A. Yes, and this edition of Chessmaster will offer more than just matchmaking with other live opponents. Rankings, chat, voice chat, private messaging, tournament play, and ladder play are just some of the many features that will be available through The Ubi.com™ multiplayer service, which is included in the game.

Q. Do I need a 3D video card to play this game?

A. A DirectX® 9-compliant video card with 32 MB RAM is recommended but not required.

Q. What kind of time controls are customizable?

A. For unrated training games there are six time controls available: infinite time, minutes per game, moves per minute, seconds per move, Fischer, and Hourglass. Rated games include only four of these same time controls, all except seconds per move and infinite time.

Q. What features will appeal to more intermediate and advanced chess players?

A. At the Chessmaster Academy, players can get advice from Grand Master Larry Christiansen on the best ways to play an "attacking" game of chess. In addition, simultaneous exhibitions against AI opponents, Ranked Play game mode, and AI that plays at GM level will all be features that should appeal to more experienced players.

Q. I've heard that Chessmaster 10th Edition can be played in enhanced 3D. What does that mean?

A. For people who play using a 3D video card, a large variety of sets and pieces can be viewed in 3D. In addition, the retail box will include a set of classic 3D glasses. The 3D glasses will make all the 3D sets viewable in ultra 3D, and players will feel like they can reach onto their screen and touch the pieces.

Q. What kind of PC system do I need to play Chessmaster 10th Edition?

A. The supported OS is Windows® 98/ME/XP (only) with a Pentium® III 450 MHz processor and 128 MB RAM (512 MB recommended). For more details on the system requirements, please visit the System Requirements section of the website.

Q. Is there a Mac® version of Chessmaster 10th Edition?

A. At this time there is no version available for the Mac for the 10th Edition of Chessmaster.

Q. I have a copy of Chessmaster 9000. Is there an upgrade option?

A. For a limited time, retail copies of Chessmaster 10th Edition will offer a $10 rebate (by mail) for previous owners of Chessmaster 9000, 8000, 7000, and 6000. See the box-front sticker at your local retailer for details.
