How to Install a Chess CD

Getting Started with a Database

There’s no possible way to give "etched in granite" instructions on how to get started with a database you’ve copied from a CD. Chess instructional CDs are written by different authors and each one organizes his work a bit differently from others. However, almost all chess CDs will start with one or more instructional texts listed at the top of the game list. There’s usually some indication as to what text you should start with (it will be named "Introduction", "Getting Started", or something similar). And the author will typically provide further instructions for the database’s use as a part of that text.

Double-clicking on one of these text entries will open up a new window which looks a lot like a Web page. Just read the text and follow the instructions. Links to games or other texts will appear in green type. You’ll often see small boxes containing a picture of a key; these will take you to game lists on particular opening variations or a certain theme (like pawn structures or typical middlegames). In the case of the Big Bird Powerbase, Sid Pickard has provided his technical instructions in the Foreword and adds some ideas on structuring your study of this opening in his "Getting Started" chapter.

And, of course, the specific program features that will help you with your study are myriad, and these will vary from program to program. We’ll look at some specific program features in future articles; meanwhile, please consult your program’s documentation – and this definitely includes the Help files, which are your best friend when using ChessBase and Fritz software.

Above all, don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by the number of features in the programs. No one (including me) learned all of this stuff overnight. Just keep in mind your twofold objectives: to increase your chess knowledge and to have fun!
