There will be a six game match, played between November 25th and December 5th, in Germany’s Art and Exhibition Hall. One Million US Dollars for a win against the world's strongest chess program - Deep Fritz.

The duel between the 30-year old World Champion from Russia, Vladimir Kramnik, and the computer program Deep Fritz 10 (produced by the software company ChessBase in Hamburg), is set for six games. Vladimir Kramnik has the chance to win one million dollars. Specifically, the World Champion can double his starting fee of $500,000 if he defeats Deep Fritz 10 and decides the six-round duel in his favor.

Vladimir Kramnik said that Deep Fritz was definitely the favorite and rated his chances of beating the machine at about 40%-50%. He said he did not worry too much about such predictions – when he played Kasparov in 2000 his chances were given at less than 10%, and yet he somehow won that match. “At any rate my chances against the computer are higher than 10%", he said wryly.

If ever attained, the victory won’t be easy for Kramnik. The last time a man knocked out a supercomputer was ten years ago, when Garry Kasparov defeated Deep Blue in New York. The computer's return match a year later in Philadelphia was marred by dubious circumstances - many experts thought Deep Blue was backed up by top-notch chess masters during the games.

The great chess duels between human and artificial intelligence, played at the highest level, have always fascinated the public. In 1997 former World Champion Garry Kasparov (Russia) lost in New York against Deep Blue. Kramnik, who defeated Kasparov in their world championship match in 2000, achieved a draw against Deep Fritz in Bahrain in 2002, just as Kasparov did a year later against Deep Junior in New York.

After years of technical advancement these fascinating encounters between man and machine now enter a new phase: Is man with his strategic abilities able to put up resistance against the brute calculating power of the machine?
