Improve Your Chess with the Right Chess Moves:Calculate Forced Moves FirstTry to calculate forced moves first. When a strong player says he sees so many moves ahead, he is really thinking about forced moves, such as checks, in which the king may only have one move to choose from. If your opponent's moves are not forced, you may overlook an obscure move by your opponent that you did not see that could cost you the game. Sometimes the principle is simply to continue checking the king, for it might lead to mate. But if it is not a forced mate, don't overlook your opponent's chances to get his attack in, and perhaps mate. Start by looking at all the checks possible, including sacrifices, if they are forced moves, and see if it leads to a win with checkmate or gain in material or mobility. Here are some quick examples of calculating forced moves that may lead to mate. |
