Calculate Forced Moves First

Example 2

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4
White gains maximum mobility for his bishop to this square

3...f5
Weakening of Black's kingside. Better is 3...Nc6, developing a piece quickly in the opening

4.d4
Controlling the center

4...Nf6 5.Nc3
White continues his quick development of pieces. Also good is 5.Ng5 threatening 6.Nf7, forking queen and rook

5...exd4 6.Qxd4
The queen comes out only after White developed most of his other pieces

6...Bd7
Better would be 6...Nc6, developing a piece while at the same time threatening the queen

7.Ng5 Nc6
Now it is too late to develop this piece. White now has a forced mate in 5 moves, but it involves a queen sacrifice, so White must calculate accurately. Black should have played 7...Qe7 to defend his kingside

8.Bf7+ Ke7 9.Qxf6+!
