Jaques of London is responsible for the design and production of the original Staunton pattern chess sets which were first offered to the public in 1849.

Jaques chess sets are the "Gold Standard" for chess sets. A Jaques will always hold its value and constantly brings the highest prices at auction. Jaques' latest creation is the new Millennium Staunton chessmen, is a modification of the design produced around the turn-of-the-century. The exquisite craftsmanship of Jaques chess sets from that period has been recaptured in the Millennium Edition.

The set is available in a 4.0" King. The pieces are crafted from fine boxwood and jet black ebony. Each piece is very heavily weighted and cushioned with high quality billiard cloth in the original Jaques tradition. The White King is marked "Jaques London" and the King's Rook and King's Knight bear the mark of a crown on their summits.

The visual impact of each piece is striking, combining both robustness and grace. From the crisp but sturdy crenels of the Queen's coronet to the exquisite hand-crafted two-piece Knight, this is one of the Jaques' finest creations. Even the King's Formee cross finial is accurately detailed.

This Limited Edition set comes housed in a fine English-made mahogany case with brass butt hinges, lock and key. The case is lined in high quality billiard cloth and bears the manufacturer's label showing the production number, and original John or Christopher Jaques signature and a facsimile of Howard Staunton's signature.
