Other Chess DatabasesOn the CBM 96 CD you will find a number of other databases dealing with different areas of chess. Each of these sections is written by a leading expert and will help you improve your chess skills. 96 Chess Strategy In the first of a three-part article series with the title “Material Imbalances” GM Peter Wells examines positions in which the initial equilibrium is disturbed in simple material terms. Each has been selected with practical value very much in mind. The article is given in this printed supplement to CBM 96. 96 Chess Endgame GM Hans Joachim Hecht deals with Queen endings, but as usual starts with pawn endgames. There are a total of 63 endgame examples, of which no less than 54 are taken from the 2003 European Championship in Istanbul. It is interesting to note the time controls the players had to play by: 90 minutes for he whole game, 30 seconds increment per move. It is not astonishing that this “modern” time control leads to a lot more errors creeping into the endgames. 96 Chess Tactics ”Heavy Artillery in Action” is the title of Valery Atlas's tactics article. “While selecting the training positions I came across many combinational games in which the key factor of success was the power of major pieces,” he writes. He presents 25 positions from games which were decided by the powerful actions of chess heavy artillery – the Queen and Rooks. ICCF Telechess The Correspondence Chess section contains nine text reports and over 2,000 games, of which 40 are annotated. Costa Rica-ch 2003 This “User database” was sent to us by IM Alexis Murillo, who has collected the games of the Costa Rican championship of 2003 and provided text reports (in Spanish) on each round. A large number of games are annotated. 96 Chess History On May 10 this year the chess world lost one of its most talented and dedicated devotees, with the passing of Milan Vukcevich in Cleveland, after a long bout with cancer. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on March 11, 1937, Milan grew up without his father. In his book, Chess by Milan (1981), Vukcevich credits his uncle Milan Trivanovic, his brother Ivan Sprung and family friend (and future IM) Trandaphilos Siaperas for instilling in him a life-long love of playing chess and composing problems. John Donaldson has written an article commemorating Milan Vukcevich. Learn about the main chess
