Online Chess Playing Sites Reviews4 World Chess Network
By Susan Polgar GM
The World Chess Network server is designed for players from novice to grandmaster. It is owned and operated by Master Games International, Inc., a corporation founded in 1997 by chess organizers, international grandmasters, and patrons of the game. On the World Chess Network, you can earn a rating, access your personal game history, and view games from around the world and more. The World Chess Network download is small and it takes just a few minutes. This was the first chess server to offer “banter chess,” in which two chess grandmasters play against each other while explaining their thoughts on each move to the audience a great way to understand and learn chess. The graphical interface is decent. The server activities for the Gold members are good. The server size and playing level are respectable. The management is very professional and courteous. Assessment: This server is definitely worth checking out. It is growing quite rapidly. An older review: The World Chess Network has a straightforward download which places an icon on your desktop for future visits. Press the "Download Now" button and sit back for a minute or two. Register for a password (which will be remembered if you so desire), sign on with your unique handle and you're ready to play. You are allowed to play two rated games a day and additional unrated games door free when you visit the site. Challenging opponents from around the world is very easy. The majority of the competition are class players. The option of playing grandmasters is rare on this site. The graphics and playing conditions are excellent. A difference from other chess playing sites is the very secure piece movement, a feature some will like and some will hate. You must click to pick up and drop a piece, instead of holding the piece with a single click. It avoids the accidental slip, but it takes a little longer. Two membership options are available, Gold ($49.95 a year or $4.95 a month) and Silver ($19.95 or $1.95 a month). The silver option allows you to play all you want, but only 12 rated games and without the privilege of playing in the tournaments. These events are regularly scheduled, but sparse when compared to other chess playing sites available on the internet. With the Gold membership, no restrictions are imposed. Of all the online chess sites, this one had the best "playing conditions". Personally, I didn't like the extra security with the pieces, but found the graphic display to be the best on the Internet. |
